Da goal for dis study is fo' undastan wass goin on insai da bren for us guys dat talk Pidgin, and da guys who know fo alredi talk da tree (3) languages one time: Hawaiian, Pidgin, English.

For da Pidgin talking folks who neva wen learn too much Hawaiian, I like learn da language processes fo' undastan betta what kine advantage Pidgin stay give us fo help us learn da Hawaiian language. All da languages English, Spanish, French, Pidgin, dey all get different benefits and negatives fo' goin learn one new language. For da community, I like advocate for us in da classroom. If majority of Hawaiʻi actually talk Pidgin, we gotta know how our language can help us learn and what is mo easy and mo hard for us fo' learn fo' ʻōlelo. For da guys already know da tree languages, I like fo' figgah how dey conneck da languages in da bren. Dis way, we can betta undastan how new learners of da Hawaiian can use da same connections for learn fo' talk Hawaiian. I like show da ways Pidgin can kōkua us. How we can demonstrate Pidgin not just one broken English, Pidgin akamai get ʻukubillions Hawaiian (sounds, words, grammar) which help da community re-learn da Hawaiian language. Mahalo!

If you speak Pidgin (but not ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) you can participate in one of our studies!

In this study you will need to identify on a numerical scale how real fake words (non-words) look in your impression of Hawaiian.

  • All participants who complete the study will be compensated with your choice of a $15 USD Amazon Gift card, Zippy's Gift card or a $15 USD donation to ka ‘Aha Pūnana Leo immersion schools.
  • The study is completely online.
  • We are looking for Pidgin speakers in Hawaiʻi and Pidgin-speaking Kānaka Maoli or other Kamaʻaina living in the Diaspora
  • You must be 18 years of age to participate.
  • The task will take no more than 50 minutes to complete.

In this study you will:

Part 1: complete a language background questionnaire (15 min)

Part 2: rate non-words (15 min)

Part 3: fill out a survey regarding questions on your language attitudes (20 min)
