English Speakers
English Speakers Can Help With My Study!
My goal in this study is to better understand the language processing behaviors of Pidgin speakers and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi-Pidgin-English trilinguals. For Pidgin speakers, this includes understanding the language learning processes for Pidgin speakers that do not yet ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. I hope to identify perceptual advantages and struggles Pidgin speakers face in processing ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi which we can later apply to the classroom. For ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi-Pidgin-English trilinguals, I am interested in understanding the speech perception processes for balancing these three languages. Our key interest is determining whether Pidgin knowledge offers a baseline boost in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi learnability, compared to English knowledge. This will our improve our understanding of how Hawaiian can be learned in the future!
If you speak English (but not Pidgin, and not ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) you can participate in one of our studies!
In this study you will need to rate on a numerical scale how "Hawaiian-like" non-words appear according to your knowledge of Hawaiian. Next you will identify to the best of your abilities your confidence on whether a word is real or non-real in Hawaiian.
- All participants who complete the study will be compensated with your choice of a $15 USD Amazon Gift card, Zippy's Gift card or a $15 USD donation to ka ‘Aha Pūnana Leo immersion schools.
- The study is completely online.
- We are looking for English speakers from Hawaiʻi.
- You must be from Hawaiʻi (have lived in Hawaiʻi for 1+ year).
- You must be 18 years of age to participate.
- The task will take no more than 60 minutes to complete.
