English Speakers Can Help With My Study!

My goal in this study is to better understand the language processing behaviors of Pidgin speakers and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi-Pidgin-English trilinguals. For Pidgin speakers, this includes understanding the language learning processes for Pidgin speakers that do not yet ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. I hope to identify perceptual advantages and struggles Pidgin speakers face in processing ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi which we can later apply to the classroom. For ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi-Pidgin-English trilinguals, I am interested in understanding the speech perception processes for balancing these three languages. I hope to understand what are common inter-language connections those who already ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi make to Pidgin, and identify if any of these connections be used to help new learners ʻōlelo.

If you speak English (but not Pidgin, and not ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) you can participate in one of our studies!

  • All participants who complete the study will be compensated with your choice of a $15 USD Amazon Gift card, Zippy's Gift card or a $15 USD donation to ka ‘Aha Pūnana Leo immersion schools.

  • We are looking for equal groups of English speakers from Hawaiʻi, English speaking Kānaka Maoli or other Kamaʻaina living in the Diaspora, and select members from elsewhere.
